An elaborate belfry is dedicated here in commemoration of the city’s deliverance from alien hands after its long occupation by the enemy in the World War. Detachments, including the band, of the Royal British Guards, imposing in their immense bearskin hats, the French Republican Guard and a regiment d’elite from Brussels, take part in the impressive ceremonies, which include the placing of wreaths by the English warriors as a tribute to their comrades who fell in the great struggles for the possession of this industrial center. |
