Sylvia Landry, a teacher from the Deep South, organizes a fundraising campaign in the North to support her school. During her trip, she meets Dr. Vivian, a young man from Boston committed to improving the social condition of Black people. Oscar Micheaux’s response to D.W. Griffith’s The Birth of a Nation (1915). Within Our Gates was added in 1992 to the National Film Registry (Library of Congress, Washington). Oscar Micheaux’s film, the oldest known feature directed by an African American, was preserved in 1993 from the only existing copy. |
